  • When I look at the responses, the common theme is that starting a startup was like I said, but way more so. People just don't seem to get how different it is till they do it. Why? The key to that mystery is to ask, how different from what? Once you phrase it that way, the answer is obvious: from a job. Everyone's model of work is a job. It's completely pervasive. Even if you've never had a job, your parents probably did, along with practically every other adult you've met.

    • he Chinese government is in a massive resource grab in Africa, which has huge ramifications for natural resource prices, not the least of which will be the cost of imported oil to the U.S., and ultimately the stock market and economy.

Beijing's latest foray is trying to buy 6 billion barrels of oil that is already spoken for via leases to Exxon, Chevron ( CVX – news – people ), Royal Dutch Shell ( RDSA – news – people ), and Total SA. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. presently leases 16 oil blocks on what remains of the oil industry's dominant Seven Sisters.

    • To set up SSH, you'll need to gain access to a trusted server where you have ssh access. Most better web hosting plans, including a few free ones, offer such services.

Once you have Open SSH installed on your server, fire up a terminal window and enter:

      ssh -Nf username@hostaddress.com -D 1080

The last bit of that line refers to the port number. Depending on your hosting service and what ports your firewall blocks, you may need to adjust it.

Now you need to tell your browser to use the tunnel we just created. Open up the preferences panel in your browser. There should be an option to configure how the browser connects to the internet. Choose "manual" and the look for the SOCKS Host line. Enter "localhost".
